Un-communication

Axel Berger

Un-communication is a constructed situation experienced one-to-one. The situation appears like a room for interrogation, a gameshow or perhaps an everyday scene of waiting. In a secluded room the participant meets another person sitting on a chair. On the floor there are markings, suggesting different directions, borders or vantage points. The spatial relation between the two is asymmetric and might be felt as voyeuristic. The situation can be explored freely but the participant mustn’t reveal him/herself to the other.

Axel Berger works with constructed situations, performances and installation. They are often hopeful and sometimes playful, interventions in the everyday. The relationship between the visitor and the artwork is in focus. The visitor is often made aware of him/herself or is given agency towards what is going on. That allows for a stretching of the masks of the everyday and the limits and structures of spectatorial situations.

After theoretical studies at the Umeå Academy of Fine Art Axel Berger graduated in 2017 from Malmö Art Academy. He has since presented work in Sweden and in the UK. In 2018 he worked in London and Edinburg and presented live performances at the Bloomsbury Theater, the Chalton Gallery, Limbo Limbo as well as at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Since 2019 he is working in Malmö.
